The Western Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Abdul Ganiyu has revealed that Tuesday’s flood in Takoradi was as a result of small drainages which do not allow for swift flow of water.

According to Ganiyu, NADMO has for some three years recommended to the city authorities to open up the drains but their warnings and recommendations have not been adhered to by the authorities, he told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show, Wednesday 22 June, 2022.

The water level was waist deep. Structures along the stretch were submerged leaving the roofing. The Apowa Police Station, frontage of the St. Mary’s Senior High School, two fuel dumps, stores and kiosks were covered with water.

Hundreds of motorists were left stranded and trapped in their vehicles for about eight hours as the rains flooded the Apowa to Amanfukuma stretch of the Takoradi to Agona Nkwanta road on Tuesday afternoon.

The flood water broke down engines of vehicles and mangled the bumpers of those vehicles that attempted to cross the flooded stretch. Professional divers and rescuers were engaged by the NADMO to rescue some trapped passengers whose vehicles had been capsized by the flood.

In a similar incident at the Central Region, about thousand people in four communities have been displaced by flood and a Prison Officer loses his life.

The Central Region Director of NADMO, Joseph Donkor has appealed through 3FM Sunrise for assistance from benevolent individuals and organizations to come to their aid because they are in a dire situation.

Seventy seven officers at the Ankaful Prisons in the Central region have been displaced after their official residence got submerged in water following the floods that occurred in the Ankaful enclave and its adjoining communities in the region.

The bungalows that housed the officers and their families got submerged after the water from the Kakum River overflowed its banks following the heavy downpour from Friday evening.
