The suspect, Osmanu Razak, was arrested in the process of digging out some cables around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange in Accra.
The rampant stealing of street light poles, cables and lamps are common place in the capital and other communities in the country.
The recently constructed George Walker Bush Highway and the Accra-Tema Motorway continue to be the hardest hit.
Currently, not a single street light on the George Bush Highway from the Mallam Junction through to the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange are functioning.
The development compelled President John Dramani Mahama to direct the police to fish out the culprits.
On Tuesday, October 20, the police in Accra was hinted about the suspicious operation of some people around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.
After nearly 24 hours of surveillance, the team of police personnel spotted someone busily digging out between the street light pole around 4.00am Wednesday, October 21.
The suspect admitted being contracted by one Cobby to undertake the project.
He told the police he has been in the business for a long time and began the Tetteh Quarshie work on Sunday, October 18.
Razak later led the media to the site where he was arrested.
A search on him revealed shovels, mattock and pickaxe.
