Prof. Mike Oquaye[/caption] The Speaker of Parliament, Reverend Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has been advised to investigate the circumstances that led to a proposal by the Parliamentary Service Board, which he chairs, to propose a new chamber for the House. Giving the piece of advice, Dr Alidu Seidu said the matter should not be left to die a natural death. “I think there should be a closure,” the lecturer at the University of Ghana insisted, “and this closure will serve as a lesson for the future.” The Political Scientist was speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, July 6. This comes in the wake of public outrage at the proposal to get a new chamber for members, with some already expressing opprobrium in the House. On Friday, some three persons were arrested for shouting ‘Drop That Chamber’ – which has been a social media campaign against the proposal – from the public gallery.
Though confirming such a proposal has been in the books of the legislative, leadership of Parliament says it is just a mere proposal and plans are not too advanced on it. Already, the Majority Caucus has hinted it is against such a move. Apparently, the Right Honourable Speaker, who hinted that the president has given his endorsement though not responding to his letter of invitation to cut sod last month, is yet to comment on the recent development.
