Same-sex marriage won't happen under Akufo-Addo – Presidency

President Akufo-Addo[/caption] The presidency has given the strongest indication yet that same-sex marriage would not be legalised in Ghana, not when Nana Akufo-Addo remains the country’s president. A statement signed by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications, on Saturday strongly rejected claims by the National Democratic Congress General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, that the president has approved gay marriage. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah made the allegation at the NDC’s Unity Walk series in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi on Saturday. The issue of homosexual is a big thing in Ghana with many showing strong disapproval for it in the midst of intensive pressure from the West for Ghana to legalise the activities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT). [caption id="attachment_26850" align="aligncenter" width="564"] file picture[/caption] “For the avoidance of doubt, President Akufo-Addo has NEVER stated anywhere that, under his presidency, ‘men will marry men, and women will marry women’,” the statement said. “It will NOT be under his Presidency that same-sex marriage will be legalised in Ghana.” The presidency is however not demanding any apology or retraction from the NDC General Secretary. “We will neither ask for an apology or retraction from the NDC General Secretary, who, obviously, is still stuck in the age of the politics of lies, deceit and propaganda, which was rejected decisively by discerning Ghanaians in the 2016 general elections.” Meanwhile, the statement said emphatically that the president would remain focused on delivering on his mandate, and improving on the quality of lives of Ghanaians.
