Reckless overtaking leaves 14 people dead at Anyinam [Photos]

Fourteen persons died on the spot Thursday night at Anyinam in the Eastern Region when a passenger vehicle collided head on with a truck in an accident said to have been caused by a reckless overtaking. Five of the deceaseds are children below the age of five, the Police confirmed to 3news.com Friday. The accident occurred at about 11:00pm when the driver of a Sprinter bus with the registration GN 3699-14, which was loaded with passengers and 25 pieces of lumber, tried to overtake some vehicles ahead of him. The truck was moving from Accra towards Kumasi. [caption id="attachment_74305" align="aligncenter" width="960"] The truck[/caption] “The cargo driver lost control of the steering wheel and in the process he collided with Mercedes Benz bus with the number GT546 U loaded with foodstuff and passengers who were also from Nkawkaw direction,” the Police told 3News. [caption id="attachment_74308" align="aligncenter" width="960"] The truck collided with this sprinter after it lost control.[/caption] The Police said 14 passengers died instantly while several others sustained injuries, noting the injured have since been sent to the Enyeresi and Kibi government hospitals. The bodies of the deceaseds have been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw for identification and autopsy. Thursday night’s accident becomes the third major one in a month, and led to the loss of 28 lives. Eastern Regional Police PRO, Ebenezer Tetteh, has urged drivers to be cautious and observe basic road traffic regulations to avoid some of these avoidable accidents.
