As part of the efforts to mitigate the impact on the closure of the Elubo border on the Muslim communities in the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region, the Member of Parliament, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has presented some items to the Muslim communities to climax Ramadan.

The economic activities in and around the western border town of Elubo is virtually ‘dead’ as a result of the closure of the Ghana-Ivory Coast border since March 2020.

Transport sector business, trading activities between the indigenes and their neighbours from Ivory Coast, food vending, cloth and shoe businesses have all collapsed virtually due to the border closure over a year ago.

Some hotels have been shut because those operating record less patronage.

Some indigenes have fled to seek business refuge elsewhere while the rest have also resorted to begging for alms before they can eat.

Elubo is turning into a ‘ghost’ town since the once vibrant business town is now virtually empty, compelling the MP to come to the aid of the Muslim communities.

The items were 66 bags of 50kg rice, 54 boxes of vegetable oil, 5 bags of 10kg rice for municipal Chief Imam and his deputies and 8 boxes of fruit juice.

The event was attended by all Imams in the Jomoro Constituency.

The Municipal Chief Imam, Alhaji Sheikh Mohammed Osman Suleman, receiving the items on behalf of the Muslim communities in Jomoro, asked every Muslim to remember Madam Affo-Toffey in their prayers.

He urged the MP to try to redeem the promises she made to the people of Jomoro.

Madam Affo-Toffey said “the central focus of Ramadan is sacrifice, self-discipline and charity. During this period, people are reminded to increase their charitable activities. In view of that, I choose to donate to our brothers and sisters who are fasting”.

She has been donating to them every year since 2018 even before becoming a parliamentary candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and now the MP.
