The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged the general public and all stakeholders to take keen interest in the protection and development of children.

The ministry, through its department of children and in collaboration with UNICEF, Plan Ghana, World Vision International, Star Ghana and other partners, in  emphasized the need for children welfare to be prioritized while wishing all children in Ghana a Happy AU Day,.

Giving a background to the AU Day of the African Child (DAC), the ministry explained in a statement that the day was instituted on June 16, 1976  in memory of the children who died as a result of the unfortunate incident that took place in Soweto, South Africa.

The observation of the day this year coincides with the 30th Anniversary of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), a milestone that was  adopted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of the African Unity in July 1990 but enforced in November, 1999.

In this regard, the gender ministry has outlined a series of events to be carried out nationwide from June 10 to June 16 when the sector minister will have a press briefing on Covid-19 and the perspective of children.

The ministry wants the public to use the occasion to reflect on the duty of care owed children and urges each person to play their role in the overall development of children.

“All stakeholders with the mandate to implement child rights and the general public must ensure that the protection and development of our children becomes our first priority. We entreat all to mark the day by creating awareness on the need for children to have access to justices in all matters concerning their welfare”, a statement from the ministry read in parts.
