He was speaking at the 4th commencement and presentation of the Presidential Charter to Ashesi University. He said contrary to his hopes that the exercise was going to receive an overwhelming support, “we seem to have become embroiled once again in another one of those full scale manufactured storms deliberately engineered to slow down progress”. This comes on the heels of members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority in parliament boycotting the exercise, citing registration requirements and procurement infractions as their reasons. They insist a Voter’s ID card must be included as a proof of nationality or citizenship. The President thinks otherwise, reiterating the position of the NIA which says it is working with a law parliament passed. “I do not think I say anything contentious if I state here that it is well known that many non-Ghanaians are in possession of voters’ cards that they obtained by offering NHIS cards as proof of identity. I do not think that there are more credible basic documentary requirements for establishing nationality or citizenship than a birth certificate or a passport,” he explained. The President is confident that Ghanaian will exercise a high sense of patriotism and support all stakeholders in executing the Ghana Card project. “I’m confident that the good sense of the Ghanaian people and the vigilance of the law enforcement agencies will together be sufficient to defeat any ill-conceived disruptive invention for achieving narrowly parochial end.” By 3news.com|Ghana]]>
