The People’s National Convention (PNC) is calling on African leaders and by extension all Africans to unite now.

Accelerating the political and socioeconomic integration of the continent to promote and defend Africa’s common position on issues of interest to the continent and its people must
be done now,” the party said in a statement to mark AU Day on Thursday, May 25.

It bemoaned the current situation where selfishness has made the long-held desire of the continent’s forebears for unity a mirage.

“African nations are clamoring to borrow money from the World Bank, the IMF amongst other sources with conditionalities that are practically unattainable,” the statement signed by General Secretary Janet Asana Nabla said.

“Whiles the continent is abound with unlimited economic viable natural resources capable of funding the continent’s developmental needs.”

It also bemoaned the high cost in phone call charges intra-Africa as against calls to countries outside the continent.

This anomaly must be corrected as its adverse effect on trade is dire,” the PNC said, recommending strongly that AU strengthens the capacity and capability of the African Development Bank to meet the financial demands of the continent in order to avoid resorting to Bretton Woods institutions for ‘killer’ loans.
