The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has welcomed the Assin North Member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson after his swearing-in on Tuesday, July 4.

The Suame lawmaker indicated that Mr Quayson is the choice of the people of Assin North and should be respected.

“We welcome our colleague. He enters this House rightly or wrongly, but he cultivated friends while he stayed there.

“I’m not sure that anybody can say that Gyakye Quayson is an enemy to him. We may disagree on a few things, but I believe that across the political divide, he made so many friends.”

“I believe the NDC wants to believe that the victory our colleague has chalked is a pyrrhic victory that will hurt the pride of the NPP, as the Minority Leader has alluded to. We must congratulate him.”

“On the other hand, we, the Majority also believe that it’s a momentary victory of a fantastic character. But that is the choice of the people of Assin North. And everybody must respect that whilst it lasts. The rest of it is in the hands of the Attorney General.”

James Gyakye Quayson swore the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament as administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

There were a lot of dignitaries in the Public Gallery for the ceremony.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) was led by 2024 Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama, who is also a former member of the House. He was accompanied by leadership of the NDC as well as former government officials.

The clergy as well as chiefs from Assin were also in the House to witness the ceremony.

Mr Gyakye Quayson was sworn in after winning the June 27 by-election.

He beat competition from Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) to win a seat he has occupied since 2021.

He was deposed by a Supreme Court ruling, which ordered the expunction of his name from all parliamentary records.
