Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu wants a bold constituent in Assin North Constituency in the Central Region to go to a police station and report, with evidence, the widely reported incidence of vote buying ongoing ahead of Tuesday’s by-elections.
The two major political parties – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – are trading accusations of vote buying in the Constituency.
Evidence abound that the two parties are sharing goodies to constituents as part of their campaign to win the by-election, which has been occasioned by a Supreme Court judgement against James Gyakye Quayson for bearing a Canadian citizen before contesting the 2020 elections.
Speaking on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, June 24, Mr Kpebu pointed out that vote buying is against the law.
“This is a law passed more than 30 years old and every time we will honour it in breach.”
He described as “small thinking” the strategy by politicians to resort to vote buying in electioneering campaign.
“The politician will change if the citizens act wisely,” he added, urging at least one citizen in Assin North to report the issue to the police for the law to take its course.
“If even one takes the time to go to a police station to lodge a complaint, then let’s go into it,” he advised, indicating that criminal prosecution can be initiated as per law.
