The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio in the Greater Accra region, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has kicked against the use of the military to provide security for some government officials in the country.

He is livid at the decision to allow military personnel to offer protection for the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Security experts, including politicians have raised red flags against joint police and military protection given to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa.

They don’t understand why there must be a military escort for the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

In this vein, the Odododiodio lawmaker has intensified the call on the government to withdraw the military protection for the EC chairperson.

Speaking at the maiden graduation of Close Protection Officers (CPO) at Regional Maritime University in Accra, Mr Vanderpuye maintained that it is not the duty of the military to provide security for Mrs. Jean Mensa.

“The army’s dictum does not allow them to provide security for individuals, they come in to secure or ensure peace when the situation is difficult,” he explained.

“The armed forces are not supposed to provide security for individuals, so why would they then be providing security for the Electoral Commission,” he re-stated.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye suggested to the government to instead invest in Professional Close Protection Officers to provide security for officeholders to free the military from the flawed duties.

Acting Vice Chancellor of Regional Maritime University, Dr. Jethro Wilbert Brooks Jnr. On the other hand, lauded the Regional Maritime Safety Security Centre for partnering Delta Flash Protection Agency to train bodyguards in the country.

He indicated that the training course which transforms bodyguards into professional Close Protection Officers (CPO) is exceptional and underscored the need for diplomats, politicians and other personalities to patronize the services of CPOs in Ghana.
