The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has voted for the wife of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyiram Alhassan, to contest the constituency by- election. Ms Alhassan who is seeking to succeed her late husband Emmanuel Kyerematen Agyarko with whom she had five children, polled 441 votes to beat four other contenders in the party’s parliament primary held Saturday. Her main contender, Ato Williams, secured 131 out of the total 670 ballots cast, while Maame Yaa Dwamena-Aboagye garnered 76 of the votes with Samuel Owusu Amankwah gathering 19 votes. Victoria Assah-Offei managed only one vote. Rejected votes were two. Ms. Seyiram Alhassan is the Chief Executive of Lymens Medical Supplies and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration (Marketing option) from the University of Ghana Business School. She will now face NDC’s 2016 parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Delali Kwasi Brempong, who was re-elected by the party Friday to contest the by-election scheduled for January 31. The widow who has just a month to conduct his campaign thanked the delegates for giving her the chance to lead the party in the constituency by-election saying “We are in this together, the campaigning begins from today” She has promised to give the NDC candidate a good run in the by-election saying, “let us all put ourselves together and go out there and face Delali Brimpong. We have done it before, we can do it again. We are retaining this seat together.” Mr. Agyarko who would have turned 61 years on December 10, died on Wednesday, November 21 in the United States where he was flown to by his family for medical care.
Few weeks later, the name of the first wife of Mr. Agyarko emerged as a possible replacement for the late MP in the constituency but supporters kicked against that They later massed up at the party headquarters in Accra to resist what they said was attempt by the party leadership to endorse the late MP’s first wife as a replacement, rather pressed for the second wife, Ms Alhassan to be selected by the party for the impending by-election. Later when nominations opened, son of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Rev.
