Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency Sarah Adwoa Safo has made her intentions to seek re-election clear to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She said only God will stop her from seeking to retain the seat for the ruling party.

“But I know He has opened the way,” she told some party supporters on Wednesday, June 14. “He has paved a new way through you.

“So, all I am saying is that if God willing the leadership of the party opens nominations for parliamentary primaries, as you are behind me, I will contest again. No baga waya,” she said in Twi amid cheers from her audience.

The former Deputy Majority Leader’s vote margin dwindled in the last elections after a fierce contest from Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). From 67.99 percent in 2016, she had 58.35 percent in 2020.

Elikplim Akurugu has been re-elected for the 2024 elections, the first time the opposition party will be retaining a candidate in the constituency.

Therefore, pundits are predicting a tough race for the incumbent MP if she returns.

Her struggles have been compounded by a fallout with leadership of her party in Parliament.

Adwoa Safo stayed out of Parliament for more than a year and was referred to the Privileges Committee for removal from the House.

Though the Committee recommended by a majority decision that her seat should be declared vacant, the Speaker, Alban SK Bagbin, adjourned ruling.

Adwoa Safo has since returned to the House.

But she is expected to face a fierce contest from the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mike Oquaye Jnr, who gave her a good run for her money in the last primaries.

The primaries have been scheduled for February, 2024.
