The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has revealed he chose the AFCON match between Nigeria and South Africa over the campaign speech delivered by the flagbearer of the governing NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Nigeria played against South Africa in the semifinal clash of the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Okay FM, Mr Asiedu Nketiah stated, amongst other things, that he listened to recorded portions of the campaign speech by the NPP presidential candidate.

“I recorded it because Nigeria’s match was more important to me than what Bawumia had to say…The match was more entertaining than what Bawumia had to say, you know it is hard to listen to lies.

“You get infuriated listening to lies, so I recorded it, and I’ve listened to some portions,” he stated.

The New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, delivered a lecture on Wednesday dubbed “Ghana’s Next Chapter,” where he outlined his governance plans ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

However, the NDC National Chairman noted that his party will go all out to expose the rot in the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, indicating that efforts to absolve Dr. Bawumia of the economic mess will not be countenanced.

“This is just a precursor; we are coming to issue a major response to his statement and expose him properly. Because if you allow falsehood to lead the nation without acting against it you are equally guilty of what is happening.

“So for us, we will keep speaking up and continue to remind him that where were you when we were fighting against E-Levy, Emission Tax, and VAT on Domestic Electricity?

“Recently they forced through to approve the budget which we denounced, where were the people in the NPP now supporting Bawumia? Were they not in parliament? What did they do? He cannot come and deceive us at all,” he quizzed.

Bawumia’s vision for Ghana criticised

Vice President and flagbearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has come under heavy criticism for suggesting that he was just in an advisory position as vice president.

He revealed that he only offered advice to the President as the head of the Economic Management Team (EMT).

Delivering his address at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday, February 7, Dr Bawumia, said “Thankfully, I was appointed as chair of the EMT. As a sub-committee to Cabinet, we do not have decision-making powers, but I am very proud of the quality of advice we have been providing over the years to Cabinet. As vice president, I was asked by the president to assist in solving the problems that were inhibiting the economy. My approach was to help formalise the economy through digitalization, as stated in our 2016 manifesto.”
