Dr Gideon Boako, spokesperson of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that most of the super delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who voted in the Saturday, August 26 super delegates conference were footsoldiers and still remain footsoldiers.

Following the elections, some analysts including a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo indicated that most of the delegates who voted in the special election were government appointees hence voted for the establishment which is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Prof Gyampo said among other things in a statement that “I have seen the first three winners in the NPP Super-Delegates Elections. My preliminary thoughts are that, nothing is surprising about the placements of 1-3. The majority of the delegates were “politicallly made” by the establishment and their continuous stay in office as appointees, and even as elected people, is based on the support of the establishment. They couldn’t have varied their votes.”

But Dr Gideon Boako explained that the special delegates election was made up of people who have served and continue to serve in various capacities in the party right from the polling station level to where they are today.

“Most of these delegates have been polling station executives and constituency officers before. They were footsoldiers and are still footsoldiers.

“Their appreciation of politics is not different from our current polling station and constituency officers, etc. They have been there before,” he said in a tweet.

He added that “If you look at the composition of the Super Delegates, only 21 (2.1%) are government appointees who could not vote in case the Party were in opposition.  All the rest are people who hold party positions, the majority of whom are elected members.  Everyone who goes through elections in the NPP and is able to win is a grassroots person.

“I am talking about 275 constituency chairmen, 272 regional executives, 137 MPs, 17 national officers, etc. This sums up to 701 delegates.  This excludes the about 96 diaspora voters who are all elected officers of the party. If you add this to the 701, you get 797 out of the 961 who are active footsoldiers of the party.”

During the super delegates conference on Saturday, August 26, Vice President Dr Bawumia swept 629 of the votes (68.15%) followed by Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen with 132 votes (14.3%) and 95 votes (10.29%) respectively.

Dr Bawumia said after the polls that “I am immensely grateful to all, for the emphatic show of confidence in me to lead our party for the 2024 Elections.

This is one step of the process, and the overwhelming support I have received throughout the country, inspires me to continue to even work harder, for a more resounding victory in the next step in November, to embark on this journey of possibilities with you. Thank you, and God bless you all.”
