The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has congratulated the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, James Gyakye Quayson.

Mr Gyakye Quayson was sworn in on Tuesday, July 4 by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, after his emphatic victory in the by-election held exactly a week ago.

In his remarks to welcome Mr Gyakye Quayson back to Parliament, the Suame MP noted that the swearing-in is constitutional and has been welcomed by all.

Therefore, he insisted, if the constitution is taking its course by way of a court action against Mr Gyakye Quayson, it should not be seen as persecution as alleged by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Mr Speaker, if this provision comes to be applied, nobody from his true conscience can say that it is persecution or selective justice. Let us respect the constitution that all of us have sworn to uphold,” he said.

“Selectivity will be that you elect to apply in piecemeal the entirety of the constitution. Mr Speaker, so people should understand and appreciate the import of this constitution and when it comes to be applied it is not selective justice.”

He cited how the “appearance and disappearance” of some past lawmakers including Adamu Sakande of Bawku Central Constituency have been triggered by the application of Article 97 of the Constitution.

“So, Mr Speaker, when you have some people talking about selective justice, we wonder where they are coming from,” he said.

The Majority Leader says the re-election of Mr Gyakye Quayson is a solemn choice made by the people of Assin North “and we must respect it”, adding that he is not an enemy to the Majority.

He only stated: “The rest of it is in the hands of the Attorney-General.”
