File[/caption] Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has said it is inappropriate for anyone to discuss the content of a leaked audio tape of a meeting at which NDC chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo was allegedly heard urging violence. The voice was heard allegedly plotting with NDC communicators to create insecurity in Ghana and unleash war against the EC chair as well. Again, among other things, the voice was heard encouraging the party members to embark on a smear campaign to paint President Nana Akufo-Addo as a violent person.
While the New Patriotic Party has called for the resignation of the NDC party chair, the NDC has accused government of bugging its office to record the audio and doctoring same to put them in a bad light. NDC’s claim has since been denied by government Speaking Saturday on TV3 news analysis show, The Key Points, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, said the narratives of the NDC do not add up, wondering how the NDC would claim their offices are bugged yet deny the content of the tape. But arguing from a legal point, Mr Kpebu said since the authenticity of the tape has been contested by the NDC, it is appropriate for the media and the public to wait for the police to establish the authenticity or otherwise of the tape before any further discussion. “It is our law that a man is innocent until proven guilty, so the beginning is that, to the extent that the NDC claims that the tape is doctored, it means for now, that is the end of the discussion, it means we cannot go into the content until the police are done with their investigations.
“That’s due process and that’s the least we can do”, he emphasized.
If the tape is proven to be authentic, then he said the NDC party chair and all the communicators who were present at that meeting can be cited for “conspiracy”.
Already, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service has invited Mr. Ampofo as a person of interest in matter for interrogation.
