The Member of Parliament for Lambussie Constituency, Bright Bakye Yelviel Baligi, has dismissed claims that Majority members (MPs) support Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to lead the New Patriotic Party into the 2024 presidential elections.

He says more of the MPs secretly support former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen as a capable candidate to floor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.

Addressing supporters of the NPP at a public durbar in Dome-Kwabenya as part of Alan Kyerematen’s tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr Yelviel Baligi insisted that they will vote for a man who will win the elections for the ruling party.

He disclosed that MPs are not forthcoming with their support for Alan Kyerematen because they fear losing their positions and seats in Parliament.

“MPs tell us this and let me tell you this. Don’t be shaking, don’t be alarmed, don’t be scared about any figures that people are throwing out there [that] this number of MPs or 118 MPs support a particular candidate,” he said on Wednesday, July 5.

“It is not true. I repeat it is not true. Individuals can talk about their support but you can’t talk about where others belong. I know what I am talking about and at the appropriate time we will talk about it.”

The NPP is preparing to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

It is currently at the vetting stage and will be done on Thursday, July 6.

The party has scheduled Saturday, November 4 for the election of its Presidential Candidate.

So far, 10 aspirants have expressed interest to lead the party into its ninth election

The front runners, however, are Dr Bawumia and Mr Kyerematen, who were both vetted on Monday, July 3.
