The Spokesperson of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has denied allegations that he is abusing incumbency in his campaign to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2024 elections.

Dr Gideon Boako emphasised that Dr Bawumia is not abusing incumbency and has, for instance, hired a bus at his personal expense for his campaign tour so far.

The Vice President began his campaign tour in the Greater Accra Region immediately after submitting his forms at the NPP Headquarters on Friday, June 16.

Many have criticised him for shirking his official responsibility as Vice President to pursue his personal ambition by going on a campaign tour.

But Dr Boako said Dr Bawumia is campaigning in a period he is supposed to be on leave.

“From January, 2017 till now Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has never gone on leave so take it that he is using part of his accumulated leave now to run his campaign,” he told journalists on Wednesday, June 21 as the Vice President visited Adentan and Madina constituencies to interact with delegates.

“I wouldn’t say he is on leave but he is taking part of his accumulated leave,” he stressed.

“He is working and at the same time doing his campaign.”

The NPP Presidential Primaries has been slated for Saturday, November 4 with a special congress to be held prior on Saturday, August 26.

So far, 11 aspirants have picked forms to contest the primaries.
