EC chair, Jean Mensa[/caption] The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has described as untrue accusations by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the voters’ register for Thursday’s by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency is not available. In a press release, the NDC had accused the EC of bloating the register to favour the New Patriotic Party (NPP). “These allegations are baseless and unfounded and we call on the public to disregard them,” the reprisal press release issued by the Commission on Wednesday said. It emphasised that the register is “clean”. The EC explained that the Special Voters’ List, Transfer List and the Proxy List were previously contained in separate documents. “They have now been combined with the main list, hence the increase in numbers,” the release signed by Dr Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, said. “The Electoral Commission has observed the NDC’s consistent attempts to malign the credibility and integrity of the Chairperson of the Commission, Commission members and the Commission as a whole. “Indeed, the Electoral Commission wonders why the NDC would choose to rely on its services for the conduct of its primary to elect a flagbearer, when the Electoral Commission is not bound by law to do so.” It asked the public to resist and condemn attempts by some members to malign some key institutions of integrity in the country.
