The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the government to place a ban on all mining activities in Ghana.
The party is livid at how mining activities have destroyed water bodies, farmlands and forest reserves.
Even though the government has rolled out several policies and interventions to salvage the situation, the menace keeps deteriorating the environment.
General Secretary of CPP Nana Yaa Gyantuah, addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, September 21 to mark Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday anniversary, called for a total ban on all mining activities.
She is optimistic that the embargo would afford the country the opportunity to put in place better policies for responsible mining and as well make it beneficial to the citizenry.
Nana Yaa Gyantuah censured President Nana Akufo-Addo for failing to act on his promise to end illegal mining.
She, therefore, asked him to apologise to Ghanaians and resign for failing woefully in the fight against galamsey.
“President Akufo-Addo put the presidency on the line emphasising his government’s commitment to end illegal mining which he has failed so he has to resign.
“What stops Nana Addo to openly apologise to Ghanaians and boldly step down?” she quizzed.
She indicated, however, that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has the zeal to stop illegal mining but his own party members wouldn’t allow him.
The CPP General Secretary, thus, urged Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor to take a bold step and ban mining and call for a national consensus to make mining responsible and beneficial to the citizenry.
