Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza has expressed his disappointment in the Ghana Police Service for going to court over the Arise Ghana Movement demonstration which is scheduled for Tuesday 28 June, 2022 in Accra.
The legislator opines that the government is using the court to gag people. He is worried that the opposition party has never won any case against the government. “I can see government has won all cases against the opposition in court” he stated
“Assuming these demonstrators were on hunger strike, would the police have gone to court to say that they should eat compulsorily?” Kwame Agboddza told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise, Tuesday 28 June, 2022 that he was actively participating in the demonstration on behalf of his constituents and that they will close the demonstration when they like but will ensure that the protest is peaceful.
He described the attempt to use the court to stop the police as an exhibition of bad faith and antidemocratic.
Director of Police Operations, ACP Henry Otoo filed an application to the court to bar the Arise Ghana Movement group from protesting from 3pm to 10pm citing terrorism and safety concerns.
Presiding judge Comfort Tasiameh ruled that Arise Ghana proceed with the demonstrations for both days but directed that they are to start at 8am and end at 4pm. She added that they should change their route by converging at Obra Spot at Circle through Farris o Avenue to TUC and end at the Independence Square instead of their proposed venue of the Jubilee house.
Mr. Agbodza recalled how the police molested some Members of Parliament who went on a protest walk from Parliament House to the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s headquarters. He alleges that the NPP government has adopted this modus operandi to suppress the voices of the people.
“I am pleading with the government to know that it is the same public opinion against the previous government that brought you to power. Don’t think power is permanent, it is transient’ he admonished
He appealed to the participants of the demonstration to operate within the confines of the law and cautioned them against vandalism of public properties. “If you don’t know and you go and destroy things or cause harm to others, we will hand you over to the law” the MP stated
