President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made it unequivocally clear that his time would not be spent on wannabe presidents who are yet to even be endorsed by their parties as a candidate of choice. According to the President, who was speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the University of Development Studies, Tamale on Saturday, November 10, he has no interest in engaging in any form of banter with such aspirants. “Let me state here and now, for the record, that President Akufo-Addo will not respond to presidential aspirants. He will respond to presidential candidates that have been duly elected by their parties. Then, he will engage those who still think Ghanaians have short memories.” Although President Akufo-Addo did not mention names, his comment seems to have been borne out of recent criticisms by presidential aspirants of the biggest opposition party in the country, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Former President John Dramani Mahama and some aspirants have been very vocal about the NPP government in recent times, taking a swipe at President Akufo-Addo and his appointees on campaign platforms. They have criticized how some key programmes of the NPP including the Free SHS policy and One-District, One-Factory are being implemented. But President Akufo-Addo said comments made these aspirants are deliberately made to get his attention, which he is ignoring. “I am sure you have seen and heard some of the presidential aspirants of the leading opposition party taking jabs at my Government in order, ostensibly, to prop up their campaigns. And, whilst at it, they are desperately trying to get me to respond to them.” President Akufo-Addo stated that he will only respond to persons duly elected as presidential candidates of their respective parties, and not to persons seeking to lead their parties.
