Dr. Donald Agumenu, a leadership and governance expert and former Special Assistant to late President Jerry John Rawlings, has urged institutions of higher learning to consider hosting leadership lectures in memory of former President Rawlings.

He emphasised that ‘Rawlingsm’ is an evolving theory encompassing good leadership, anti-corruption, inclusion, and justice.

In a news brief commemorating the third anniversary of Rawlings’ passing, Dr. Agumenu highlighted Rawlings’ leadership style, focusing on inclusion and diversity management, which fostered inter-religious cohesion for national development. He urged the younger generation to learn from Rawlings’ legacy.

Dr. Agumenu noted Rawlings’ role in creating the Office of the National Chief Imam and instituting Muslim Holidays as statecrafts that contributed to the stable political and security architecture enjoyed today. He emphasized Rawlings’ impact on peace, national cohesion, wisdom, and spirituality in Ghana and beyond.

Describing Rawlings as a true advocate for the underdogs, Dr Agumenu praised the late President for fostering ideas that addressed Ghana’s struggles and advocated for emancipation from poverty and ignorance. Rawlings’ humility and congeniality were highlighted as qualities that endeared him to the populace.

“JJ Rawlings was indeed the man of the people; a pure-bred leader who was ahead of his time; a bitter reality his detractors only admit behind closed doors,” said Dr. Agumenu.

He urged the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the political party Rawlings founded, to champion the ideals and values he stood for.

Former President Rawlings passed away on November 12, 2020, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.

Rawlings served two terms and handed over power in 2001.
