Pollster Ben Ephson has insisted that the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 general elections John Dramani Mahama was unable to articulate his views on the free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme properly hence, the NDC’s defeat.
He explained that people were unsure of what Mr Mahama’s decision on the policy was going to be if he was voted for therefore, they decided to vote for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for a second term in office while they voted against most of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates.
Mr Ephson made this same point immediately after the 2020 elections and has reiterated same on the New Day show on TV3 with Berla Mundi, Tuesday May 31, 2022, while commenting on the just-ended regional executive elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Asked whether the NPP can break the 8-year cycle, he answered “the NPP will be electing a new flagbearer, how smooth that process will be, is a factor. Breaking the 8 will depend on the aftermath of that election. For NDC, they will have to be a bit tactical…to lose over 500,0000 votes in the 2020, I will put the blame on the its presidential candidate John Mahama.
“A lot of people thought that Mahama’s progressively free SHS meant that when he come he will cancel it. So people voted against the NPP parliamentary candidate but voted for Akufo-Addo to continue.”
Mr Mahama however disagreed with the election results as announced by the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.
He went to the Supreme Court to compel the EC to rerun the polls but the apex court dismissed the petition on the basis that it was without merit.
