A Police constable has been shot dead by an unidentified gunmen in Ho in the Volta region in what is suspected to be an armed robbery incident.

The officer, whose name is yet to be released by the Police, was on duty at the Radiant Gas filling Station off the Ho-Adaklu-Sogakokpe road when he was shot six times in close range between hours of 1:00AM and 3:00AM Tuesday.

TV3 correspondent Robert Abilba reports that the riffle of the officer was taken away by the assailants who the Police have launched a manhunt for.

The officer was alone on duty at the time of the incident. Operators of the gas filling station Monday night asked by the Police to close because information they gathered suggested there were unscrupulous persons in Ho who they suspected were going to strike.

According to some drivers who witnessed the incident, the gunmen pursued the Police officer who had sought refuge in one of the rooms at the station, dragged him out and shot him in close range  before bolting with his official gun.

His body has since Tuesday morning been transferred to Accra. As at Tuesday morning, the Police Command was yet to inform the family of the deceased officer.

It is not clear whether the people are armed robbers or not. Information reaching tv3network.com indicates there have been series of armed robbery in Ho in recent times, and that within two weeks, there have been three of such incidents including one at the Ho Central Market.

The Police, according to our correspondent, has not been able to bring the menace under control because the armed robbers appear to be on top of their game in the Ho metropolis.
