Police condemns stripping of suspected thief in Kumasi

IGP, Asante-Apeatu[/caption] The Police Administration has condemned the stripping and assault of a lady who was alleged to have stolen something at Kejetia in Kumasi, a video of which has gone viral on social media. A statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police, Cephas Arthur, expressed worry at the resurgence of instant justice where persons suspected to have committed criminal offences are attacked by mob and in some instances lynch them. “Perpetrators of this unlawful and unfortunate practice are advised to desist from it and report all suspected criminals to the Police for the necessary action,” it said. Meanwhile, the Police has warned instant justice is a crime itself and persons who engage in visit instant justice on suspected criminals are liable for prosecution. The Police explained that no one is guilty of any offence until proven otherwise by a court, stating that instant justice “has no place in a democratic dispensation where rule of law operates [and] violates the rights of persons who fall victims to it”.
