The National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has accused persons in academia, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the media of using their platforms to propagate false narratives in support of coups and military rule.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah said these individuals have gained substantial following on social media, which they are using to propagate misinformation, capable of threatening Ghana’s peace and stability.

He made this assertion at a conference on the the theme, “Impact of Disinformation on Electoral Integrity, Peace, and Security in Africa” held at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra on October 19, 2023.

This trend, according to him, is worrying and puts the country’s democracy under threat.

“In Ghana, a more disconcerting trend is also emerging. Notably following the coup in Niger, certain individuals in academia, civil society and the media, from what I have observed have been propagating false narratives in support of a coup or military rule.”

According Mr. Kan-Dapaah, “as we approach the critical December 2024 general election, this is a matter of serious concern. Misinformation, whether intentional or inadvertent, from these individuals because they are influential, poses a significant threat to Ghana’s stability,” he said.

The National Security Minister said this development is a matter of serious concern not only to security operatives but to all citizens.

He therefore called on all Ghanaians to be vigilant and to reject any attempts to sow the seeds of discord and division in the country.
