Pentecostal & Charismatic Council on KNUST unrest: Surcharge students but VC must bow out gracefully

The destruction on campus was inordinate[/caption] The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has called on the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Kwabena Obiri Danso, “to gracefully bow out”. The GPCC said if indeed the leadership of the Vice Chancellor “is autocratic, then he must bow out”. A member of the National Executive Council of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Bishop Samuel N. Mensah, made the call in an interview on Wednesday on the KNUST developments on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa. “Our leadership should move away from autocratic leadership. Human beings were not made to be dominated or lauded over,” he explained. Bishop Mensah said: “This is a reflection of the management style of the university authorities. This is a reflection on indiscipline in society. We have become a lawless state, lawless society and this is what every government should seek to tackle”. “The way forward is the broader consultations. That is the way,” the man of God explained. Bishop Mensah observes: “University students are not children, so we need to adopt the involvement approach. That approach by the Vice Chancellor was not the best. When the students were not ready to accept your policies and changes, take your time and consult them, but don’t enforce it on them”. He said the GPCC does not endorse the violence and the destruction of property by the students. “The behaviour of the students must be condemned. We don’t support the actions of the students,” he added. Cost of destruction The GPCC NEC member said the students must be made to pay for the cost of the property that were destroyed and not the tax payer. “The students should know that whatever has been destroyed should not come to the tax payer. . .it should go to their parents.
