The PEC institute in partnership with Bridget Bonnie and friends has launched the pad bank at Alorkpem Community School and also put up washrooms for students since there haven’t been any proper washrooms for their use since the school was established.

The project dubbed ‘launch a pad bank’ campaign, seeks to keep our young girls in the rural schools in school and also teach them to practice good menstrual hygiene.

Speaking at the launch, Miss Bridget Bonnie, The founder of the PEC institute stated that, the campaign which is centered around hygiene is an initiative to be implemented in various rural schools of which Alorkpem community school has had its successful launch.

She said, girls should not have a reason to miss school during their menses just because there are no washrooms to change and sanitary pads to use when the need arises, as was the case for girls in Alorkpem community school.

Miss Mabel, a trained nurse on the team, educated the girls at Alorkpem community school on menstrual hygiene and management. She also highlighted the importance of reproductive health talks and encouraged parents and school authorities to create a youth-friendly environment to address challenges such as teenage pregnancy that may be a result of the lack of knowledge surrounding the subjects menstruation and reproductive health care.

The Headmaster of Alorkpem community school, Mr Samuel Awuku on behalf of the entire school expressed gratitude for the launch of the pad bank and the building of washrooms for the school, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on class attendance and academic excellence.
