President John Dramani Mahama says his heart was gladdened to see members of various political divide participate in a peaceful demonstration that sought to promote and rekindle national unity.

The President has commended participants and organizers of last Wednesday’s march dubbed One Ghana; One People.

The demonstration organized by a group of individuals was in response to an alleged ethnocentric comment made by leading New Patriotic Party member Yaw Oasafo Marfo.

The opposition party member was heard on a secretly recorded tape making certain comments touted as tribal bigotry, although he has claimed the tape was doctored by political detractors to score cheap points.

Mr. Osafo Marfo’s party dissociated itself from the comment by allowing some of its party members to participate in the One Ghana; One People demo last Wednesday.

During the march, people from all political divides were seen carrying placards, dressed in the national colors, and at some points held their hands together in circles to send a strong message of unity.

Speaking on the theme for the 58th independence anniversary at the Black Star Square in Accra, “Achieving Transformation through National Unity”,  the President professed that his heart was gladdened to see people from diverse political, ethnic and religious background participate in the march that sought to emphasize the need for a united country.

“My heart was gladdened when I saw the unanimity exhibited in the recent demonstration held in support of equal citizenship. The participation of various personalities in this demonstration indicates that on both sides of the political divide, we are resolved not to allow ourselves to be dissolved by ethnic or regional sentiments”.

“I am absolutely encouraged by this show of solidarity by young politicians on the issue of national unity. Each one of us in our ethnic and cultural diversity contribute in our unique way to make our nation great and strong. Our diversity must therefore be a source of strength and not  a weakness. Our diversity should be harnessed and forged into a potent weapon for the realization of our national interests. They should not provide the grounds for tearing ourselves apart” the President stated.
