Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted that teacher and nurse trainees will be put back to benefitting from monthly allowances if the NPP reclaims power in 2016.

He explained that teacher and nurse trainees are a different group of students who must not be made to access grants like any other tertiary students.

“The teachers are different cattle of fish from any other graduate,” he said given their posting after college.

“We cannot do that to any other graduate who finishes. These are part of the social safety nets.”

He said by cramming teacher and nursing trainees together with other tertiary students, colleges of education are being made a “preserve of the rich”.

He, therefore, minced no words that an Akufo-Addo-led government will reintroduce the allowances.

“When we put in the National Health Insurance Scheme, it wasn’t for a particular region. It was for everybody. When we come in and restore the teacher training allowances, it will be for everybody. When we restore the nursing training allowances, it will be for everyone.”

Dr Bawumia was speaking on Ho-based Volta Premier FM on Thursday, April 16 when he made these remarks.
