Former Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Jantuah has said that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) erratic power supply (Dumsor) that happened under the Mahama administration as a political tool to come into the office.

Now, she said, the NPP is faced with the same challenge and is unable to release timetable because of the politics of it.

Nana Yaa Jantuah explained that when she was at the PURC, she warned persons especially the NPP to desist from using energy issues as political tools but they did not listen only to come to power to be confronted with the same challenge.

“They used dumsor as a political tool to come to power and now it has come to meet them. I remember when I was at PURC I always said that no person should use electricity or energy issues as a political tool because you don’t know when it will catch you, now it has come to catch up with them and because of the politics of it they don’t want to bring the timetable,” she told TV3 on Thursday, March 28.

Most parts of the country especially in the capital city, have been experiencing power cuts.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been putting the blame on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for the power cuts.

The power distributor, in a statement dated Thursday, March 28, said the power outages experienced in the affected areas are a result of GRIDCo reducing power supply to the Pokuase bulk supply plant.

“The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited wishes to inform our cherished customers and the general public that the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has reduced power supply to our Pokuase Bulk Supply Point, resulting in outages in the following areas:

“Kwabenya, Agbogba, Mayera, Part of Teiman, Ayi Mensah, Katapor, Top Herbal, Bohye, Abloradjei, Pure Water, Pokuase Township, Fountain Gate, and surrounding areas,” it said.

“ECG wishes to assure all affected customers that once GRIDCo turns on supply, power will be restored. ECG regrets the inconvenience caused to the affected customers,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, an NPP stalwart, Gabriel Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed concerns as to why the country is facing power outages at this time.

Mr. Otchere-Darko cannot fathom why the nation had a stable electricity supply even at the peak of the economic crisis two years ago and is experiencing outages now that a general election is looming.
