A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said that the upcoming flagbearer elections is not a make or break for the governing party.

He stated that the internal election is meant to pick a flagbearer who will lead the NPP into the 2024 General elections and win.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, November 1, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture stressed “The November 4 flagbearer elections is not a make or break for the party.”

He further indicated that he embarked on the most issue-based campaign after highlighting his achievements in the agric sector.

He had promised to set up an agricultural management team if he becomes president of Ghana

Dr Afriyie Akoto explained that the agricultural management team will have the responsibility of ensuring adequate financial resources are allocated to agriculture.

In an earlier interview with TV3’s Kemmini Amanor, he underscored the importance of agriculture in terms of its potential to transform the country.

“We should give it special attention by making sure that at least we reach the AU target of allocating 10 percent of our budget to agriculture.

“To do that, I will set up an agricultural management team chaired by the Vice President and the Vice President will be presiding over the agricultural management team to ensure that the budget required for the transformation of agriculture will take place. And then, Ghana can reap the benefits.”

The NPP will be going for the flagbearer elections on Saturday, November 4.

The Presidential Elections Committee released the guidelines for the primaries that will take place at all the 276 constituencies across the country and the Party Headquarters, Asylum Down, Accra.

In a statement, the committee said the guidelines outlined the procedures and rules for the primaries that would elect a presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.

“The Electoral Commission (EC) shall supervise the conduct of the elections and shall have the full responsibility of ensuring a transparent, free and fair election. No persons, whether party officials or otherwise whatsoever shall act in contravention to the EC and these guidelines.”

The Committee added that “the security activities rest exclusively with the police and access beyond security perimeters is restricted to Delegates, Presidential Elections Committee Members, Contestants and their accredited agents.
