The Coalition – made up of anti-government pressure groups Let My Vote Count, Alliance for Accountable Governance and Movement for Change – took to the streets to protest the current voters’ register, which they claim is bloated.
At a point during the march, which involved thousands of people, the protesters clashed with the police over the agreed routes. The ensuing altercation resulted in the use of force by the police to disperse the crowd.
Many were injured, as a result, while some were arrested.
But in a statement issued on Thursday, September 17, the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, accused the police of doing the bidding of government by their action.
“The Ghana Police Service must show fidelity to the state rather than the ruling government, and also, be professional in their conduct in order to protect life and property of all our citizens, instead of the arbitrary application of its powers,” Mr Agyepong said.
“We expect that at all material times, the state security agencies, will discharge their duties in fairness and accordance to the supreme laws of our land.”
In condemning the action of the police, Mr Agyepong called on the top hierarchy to “look into this matter with all the seriousness that it deserves and ensure that those officers who perpetrated this act are brought to book, in order to avert such occurrence in the future”.
He expressed empathies for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
