The Ministry of Roads is set to construct a Bailey bridge across the river on the Walewale-Nalerigu road, whose bridge was washed away following torrential rains on Wednesday, August 9.

The downpour, which resulted in severe flooding of the area, destroyed livestock and property including the Gbanni-Tinguri bridge on the Walewale-Nalerigu road.

North East Region Minister Yidana Zakaria said on Thursday, August 10 that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, swiftly intervened and got the Ministry of Roads to visit the affected area for immediate solution to reopen the Walewale-Nalerigu road, which has been cut off following the floods.

After two officials of the Ministry, Deputy Minister Stephen Jalula and Chief Director Dr. Abass Awolu, visited the affected area to assess the extent of damage, it has emerged that the Ministry intends to immediately fix the Bailey bridge to bring an immediate solution.

According to the Roads Ministry, the Bailey bridge, a metal bridge which can be quickly installed, will be fixed away from the collapsed bridge over the river to enable movements while the collapsed bridge and the damaged road are fixed.

For the collapsed bridge, the Ministry of Roads will reconstruct it with a much bigger culvert across the road to replace the old one.

Parts of the damaged Walewale and Nalerigu road will also be fixed as part of the repair works.

Meanwhile, the regional minister has thanked Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his swift intervention.
