Former President John Dramani Mahama has said everyone should freely come out and fully participate in the governance of the country and even the process to elect leaders.

In his view, nobody should be apolitical because when bad leaders are elected, their decisions affect everybody including those who say they won’t take part in the process.

Speaking at the Chatham House on Friday, February 27, he made reference to how at the moment, individual bondholders are now coming out in their numbers to reject their inclusion in the Domestic Debt Exchange programme announced by the Government of Ghana.

There are individual bondholders who said they were neutrals, they don’t do politics but today when their bonds were touched they are jumping out, Mr Mahama said.

“Everybody must be interested in how the nation is run, nobody should be apolitical,” he said.

He further told African countries to strive to deepen democracy in the modern system.

Mr Mahama called for youth participation in the governance process in Africa.

He noted that Africa has a youthful population of about 60 percent.

“We need to continue to deepen democracy in the modern world,” he said.

His address was on the theme “Africa’s Strategic Priorities & Global Role”.
