Nkrankrom, a community in the Ahafo Ano North District of the Ashanti Region which has been struggling for potable water for the past years, has been provided with a borehole by the Rotary Club of Kumasi East.

Residents previously had to walk 30 minutes in order to get water from what is considered an ill-treated stream for drinking and cooking but availability of water become scarce during the harmattan season.

After several appeals, the Rotary Club of Kumasi East, with support from the Rotary Club of Copenhagen,  responded by providing a manual-pump borehole at the cost of 5,000 dollars to the community with a population of about 500.

A resident, Iddrisu Mohammed commended Rotary Club for the gesture, noting “previous and successive governments promised to provide us water but none has been fulfilled. They always come to give us empty promises just to get our votes”.

Another resident, Juliana Commodore said their water problem is now a thing of the past.

A member of Rotary Club of Kumasi-East, Emmanuel Aguma said the move is part of their social responsibility of reaching out to needy communities.

“Rotary Club has a mandate of impacting positively in the lives of people and communities in need, so this is just one of our projects in our quest to better the living condition of people”.

“Our decision to provide a borehole for this community was after our visit to the community and realization of how important and urgent the people need potable water. We had to quickly organize ourselves and source for funds from our counterparts in Copenhagen (Denmark) to start the construction of this borehole,” he added.

He said, the club is ever ready to provide assistants to all communities in need of basic amenities and humanitarian support.
Rotary Club is a non-profit organization that enables members to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, education, and poverty alleviation.
