New GBC boss calls on Media General

The Director General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has suggested the setting up of a national broadcasters’ association to deal with emerging policies confronting broadcasters. “What affects private television stations affects GBC too and we must come together.” Speaking during a courtesy call on management of Media General, Prof. Alhassan expressed uncertainty about the future of digital television and called for unity. The meeting afforded management of the two TV stations to discuss the future of broadcasting and deliberate on outstanding issues. It also afforded the new Director General of the national broadcaster an opportunity to introduce himself to management. While suggesting the setting up of a national broadcasters’ association, Prof Alhassan called for a new chapter between Media General and GBC. He said emerging trends suggest broadcasters must come together and move beyond pettiness. Group CEO of Media General Beatrice Agyemang Abbey described the meeting as historic and crucial coming on the heels of emerging issues affecting broadcasting in Ghana. She was excited about the visit, suggesting TV3 – the foremost media firm of Media General – and GBC should look at the possibility of co-producing programmes to share cost. She said although the two stations have different values and visions, it is driving a common cause and she called for partnership. On the upcoming election coverage, Media General’s Group CEO said media houses must sign a peace accord as well on reporting. She said the proliferation of social media and the dangers it poses, therefore calling for a well-structured media to direct the pace of content. Chief Operations Officer of Media General Kingsley Afful expressed optimism about the meeting, promising to open up more for mutual benefit.
