Some youth of the incumbent National Democratic Congress, NDC, in the Yapie-Kusawgu Constituency of the Central Gonja District of the Northern Region, have given President John Mahama a two-week ultimatum to remove the District Chief Executive, Shiraz Ibn Shamsudeen from office.

According to the spokesman for the disgruntled youth who went on rampage Tuesday, Samudin Abdul Karim the DCE, does not associate himself with the youth “and he is not even known to some communities ever since he assumed office two years ago and this does not auger well for the party”.

He also accused the DCE of awarding some government contracts to himself explaining those cases constitute a conflict of interest.

Mr. Karim said” failure by the President to heed to their call within the stipulated period will see more reactions from them and will also lead to the defeat of the party in the constituency for the first time in 20 years.”

In what appears to be a prelude to what they might do if their request is not granted, the angry youth burnt car tyres and an NDC embossed party T-shirt in front of the constituency office at Yapie.

The agitated youth had initially planned to set the party office on fire but later put that on hold.

The NDC has retained the constituency seat for the Member of Parliament, Amadu Seidu. The party has since 1992 won in every presidential election in the constituency.

Some Northern Regional party executives who later came to scene to calm down the angry youth left the scene unceremoniously.  The DCE, Samudin Abdul Karim was not available for comment.

Ghana has over the years witnessed such acts of hooliganism by supposed members of the major political parties the NPP and NDC.

Political watchers say these things keep recurring because the perpetrators are often shielded from arrest and prosecution by their parties in power.
