Member of Parliament for Nyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has managed the local economy better than what the National Democratic Congress (NDC) did.
He said the NDC had had more time to govern this country than any other political party however they have always been growing the economy below 4 per cent without any problems such as a pandemic of this nature.
The Akufo-Addo administration, he said, has managed the economy better even with the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
His comments come on the heels of accusations made against the Akufo-Addo-led government by a Former Deputy Minister of Finance Mr Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan to the effect that the administration cook up economic figures to paint a good picture of the the Ghanaian economy.
In Mr Ricketts-Hagan’s view, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and its ravaging impact on the local economy exposed the government and the figures that were put out pre-pandemic by the managers of the economy.
The former Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South said on the Key Points with Dzifa Bampoh on TV3 Saturday January 29 that the government has poorly managed the economy.
“Before pandemic you were cooking figures,” he said
He was contributing to a discussion on the E-levy proposal.
He indicated that the government is only resorting to the easy approach to raising revenue with this particular policy proposal.
But reacting to him, Dr Stephan Amoah, on the same show, also accused him of the same action saying “NDC gave fake economic figures and Ghana was fined
“It was not under Mahama though but it was under NDC.”
Meanwhile, as part of move to get Ghanaians to accept he E-levy, the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has reduced the rate from the initial 1.75 per cent to 1.5 per cent after meeting with the Minority leadership again as part of consultations on the proposal today, Friday January 28.
TV3’s Parliamentary Correspondent Komla Klutse reported that the Minority are however still opposed to it. They want the proposal to be dropped entirely.
This meeting was after the first meeting between the two parties on Thursday January 27 ended in a deadlock with both side remained intransigent on their position regarding the proposal.
The meeting formed part of stakeholder engagements on the proposal.
