Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged that there will be no more mandatory National service for university graduates when he assumes office in 2025.
The Vice President made this known while addressing Ghanaians at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra on Wednesday, February 7.
Dr. Bawumia who is seeking to be elected as the next president explained that this plan is to allow university graduates who can secure jobs after school to do so without necessarily completing their national service before they can secure jobs.
“My government will propose that those who after completion of their education can secure jobs will be exempted from the national service. National service will no longer be mandatory and students will have the option to decide whether to do the national service,” he noted.

According to the Vice President, companies can take advantage of such a decision to recruit students from campuses who complete their university education.
He added that his government will establish a National Open University Ghana in collaboration with the private sector with focus on technical and vocational skills.
Dr. Bawumia noted that his government will make robotics and coding standard in senior high schools to prepare students for the fourth industrial revolution workplace.
“I will enhance the repositioning of the education system towards STEM, artificial intelligence, robotics to cope with the demands of the fourth industrial revolution and job creation.”
