Minority Leader denies opposing Mahama’s candidature

Tamale South Member of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu is the Minority Leader[/caption] Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu says he is not opposed to the candidature of former president John Dramani Mahama for this year’s presidential primary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) contrary to reports. There has been news making rounds on some social media that the Tamale South Member of Parliament was against the candidature of John Dramani Mahama. In a statement he signed on Wednesday, August 1, Haruna Iddrisu denied ever making any such comments. “I wish to state categorically that I have never issued a statement to that effect, neither have I instructed anyone to issue a statement to that effect.” He described as “malicious” any such statement circulating under his name. According to him, the supposed statement is only an attempt by some persons to create disaffection within the NDC, and the unity within the Minority Caucus in Parliament. He charged the general public to treat the statement with the contempt it deserves. Haruna Iddrisu further stated that his primary objective as Minority Leader is to lead the Minority to support the leadership of the NDC in its efforts to mend differences and unify the rank and file of the largest opposition party, following the 2016 election defeat rather than taking sides. “It will therefore be at odds with this objective to be openly opposed to or in support of one candidate or the other.” “As Leader of the Minority Caucus, I remain neutral in the process of electing a flag bearer for our great Party, and I pledge to respect the will of the delegates and to support whoever emerges as the eventual winner,” Haruna Iddrisu said. He also called on all supporters and members of the NDC to concentrate on working towards the unity of the party, and desist from acts that will divide the party.
