Meningitis death toll hits 93

The death toll following the outbreak of the pneumococcal meningitis has risen from 85 to 93 within one week.

The death toll represents 16.9 percent of the reported cases which stand at 548 across the country, health officials have said.

Statistics given by the Ghana Health Service (GHS)

indicates the Brong Ahafo is leading the death toll with 52, followed by the Northern Region with 15 deaths, Upper West has 9 and Ashanti Region with 8 death toll. The rest of the regions are:    Eastern 3,Greater Accra 2,Upper East 2, and one each in Volta and Western.

Only the Central Region is yet to record any case of pneumococcal meningitis.

The outbreak of Meningitis started in December 2015 in the Brohain and Seikwa communities in Tain District of Brong Ahafo region during which 31 people were affected with 9 deaths.

The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Badu Sarkodie told Onua 95.1FM that the Service is working assiduously to control the diseases.
