The officers form a reinforcement team called in from Tamale after gunfights on Thursday left four dead and nine others severely injured.
Seven houses were also set on fire.
The conflict is said to have been sparked by a directive from the regent of Nanum to have butchers of the town send part of their slaughtered meat to his palace, as part of a long-standing tradition, which seems to have been in oblivion as a result of the chieftaincy disputes there.
The butchers were said to have failed to comply with the directive.
Speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Thursday, July 9, Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, Ebenezer Tetteh, said but for the swift intervention of the police, more casualties would have been recorded.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) added that reinforcement was, later, called in from the regional capital.
“As we speak now we have covered every inch of grass in Bimbilla,” he stressed.
Authorities are considering re-imposing a curfew on the township though stringent controls on the movement of residents have been instituted.
