The new Yaa-Naa[/caption] Former President John Mahama has congratulated the newly enskined overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II, noting he is happy to see peace has been restored to the area after over a decade conflict. “So happy for this day, and we should be eternally grateful to Allah that Dagbon has finally seen peace,” he tweeted Saturday. Custodians of the Dagbon tradition led by the Gushei Naa and Kugnaa have nominated the Chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Abubakar to succeed the late Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II who was killed in 2002. His nomination which is in line with the customs and traditions of the Dagbon people followed the completion of the final funeral rites for the two late overlord of Dagbon this week.
A traditional rite was performed late Friday night at Yendi in the Northern Region to complete the processes for Yoo Naa Mahama II. Though there were attempts by some unknown persons to mar the rites despite curfew in the area, the security personnel managed to quell it and brought the situation under control for the completion of the process. Congratulating the new Yaa – Naa, Mr. Mahama said the completion of the peace process followed many years of efforts by traditional leaders and successive governments. “After many years of hard work, negotiations, long meetings, disagreements, traditional considerations and agreements, we celebrate the efforts of successive governments for this day.“Working together, the Eminent Chiefs appointed to help resolve the very challenging Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, the Andani and Abudu Royal Families and the people of Ghana, this major success has been achieved and we have a new Yaa-Naa,” Mahama stated. He applauded the two royal families of Dagbon and the Eminent Chiefs led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II whose road map led to the peace accord that pave the way for the performance of the two royal funeral rites. “Congratulations to Yaa-Naa, Abukari Mahama II, and I pray for greater wisdom for you as you begin your reign. Let’s continue to work together for lasting peac,” he appealed.
