Former President John Dramani Mahama has referred teachers to his promise on page 69 of the 2020 manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing it remains true today.

He assured that the NDC remains committed to investing in teacher education and professional development programmes.

These were contained in a statement issued by three-time Presidential Candidate on Thursday, October 5 to mark World Teachers Day.

He called for a reflection on the poor state of education currently in Ghana, urging reforms as well as improvements in teaching and learning outcomes.

“Improving teaching and learning must be a top priority for Ghana as we forge ahead towards a more prosperous future,” he wrote on Thursday.

“Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and we must provide them with the resources, tools, support, and training to enable them to deliver good quality education to our children.

“To this end, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) remains committed to investing in
teacher education and professional development programmes.

“We understand that well-trained and motivated teachers are the key to unlocking the full potential of our students.”

Mr Mahama, who was president between 2012 and 2017, also promised to address challenges such as the need for better remuneration and improved working conditions.

“Our pledge to Ghanaian teachers, on page 69 of our People’s Manifesto of 2020, remains true today.

“Education is a fundamental right, and every child in Ghana deserves equal access to quality education.”

On the flagship Free Senior High School (SHS), the 2024 NDC flagbearer promised to strengthen its implementation “by investing in infrastructure, expanding access to educational resources, and improving the overall learning environment in our Senior High Schools”.

He renewed commitment to ensuring that teaching and learning in Ghana reach new heights.

“Together, we can build an education system that equips our children with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become responsible and productive citizens.”
