Law students call for investigations into police brutalities on demonstrators

The National Association of Law Students is calling on the Inspector General of Police and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate brutalities meted out on some of its members who were demonstrating on Monday, October 7. Some law students embarked on a demonstration to protest against the mass failure of students seeking to enter the Ghana School of Law as well as demanding reforms in legal education. While marching to the Jubilee House to petition the president, police fired rubber bullets as well as water cannons and tear gas at the protesting students, leaving some injured. Read:13 persons arrested in law students demo released It is on the back of these developments that the National Association of Law Students issued a statement on Monday seeking the attention of the IGP and CHRAJ “We are therefore calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Police Council and the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to thoroughly investigate this brutal attack on innocent Ghanaians and take appropriate disciplinary actions against any police officer found culpable in this shameful conduct,” the statement read. The association refuted police claims that they were not informed ahead of the demonstration, stating they wrote to the police 10 clear days ahead of the demonstration. According to the students, they sought to embark on a peaceful demonstration, and did not throw stones at the police as alleged.
