Land guards demanding ¢6,500 from developers  at Tuba

Developers at Tuba township near Kokrobite in the Greater Accra Region are under threat from land guards in the area who are demanding 6,500 cedis from them or face their wrath. Persons who failed to pay the amount before commencing construction of their buildings in the area came under attack last Saturday when the land guards stormed the place and started shooting into homes in the area. They have threatened to demolish buildings whose owners who refuse to pay. No casualty was recorded in the incident which was immediately reported to the Kokrobite Police. The Police have since gone to the scene to assess the nature of the incident and promised to investigate. Assembly member for the area, Karim Tetteh, said residents who became angry over the matter contemplated a reprisal but he managed to talk them out of it. Speaking to Johnnie Hughes Friday on Community Connect, a development oriented show on 3FM, the Assembly member said the issue of land guards have been lingering for some time now, claiming whenever a report is made against them, the police assure them of acting on it but do not see anything afterwards. “The police have done little in addressing persistence attack,” he noted. He said the situation at the area is currently calm due to media reports on the matter, adding the Police have commenced investigations into the Saturday incident. The residents have meanwhile appealing for persons arrested for land guard duties to be refused bail until diligent investigations are done. Mr. Tetteh claimed a resident offered his building to be used as a Police Station in the area but the Police rejected it on grounds that the place was not conducive to be used for a Police station.
